Setting up a Timetable

As the beginning of lectures draws closer I examine the multitude of projects I’m considering getting involved with, and I realize just how much work all of it really entails. This summer, I had one of my most unproductive vacations since my school time, and to remedy that I will have to take up extra workload on the road ahead. But just how much I should press myself to do, I’m not quite sure.

There are several interesting and important projects I aim to participate in or undertake myself.

First, there’s the English translation of a German web design project named SELFHTML (www.selfhtml.org). It has been around for quite some time and I don’t know of a single web designer who speaks German and does not use that free and extremely useful service created by Stefan Münz in their works. Unfortunately, it has never been transalted into English, and that’s where I come in. In a fit of (for myself) unprecedented volunteering spirit, I e-mailed him and agreed to undertake the task. I just now translated the very first page and had to realize: I had no idea what I was getting into. But I think I can do a valuable part for a lot of web design newcomers and pros alike, and my cv should profit from it as well.

Second, there’s my ambition to finally learn Spanish. I’ve been enrolled in Spanish classes during my first year at Hull University, but the type of teaching did not satisfy me, so I dropped out before the first semester was over. Now, I bought a Spanish self-learn software called “Tell Me More”, and, after a brief look at it, it too forshadows long and probably painful hours at the computer. I sincerely hope I can muster up the self discipline necessary for the undertaking.

Third, there is the participation on “Hullfire”, Hull University Union’s own student magazine. I’d not only like to write for them, but also become an integral part of the publishing process and try to lift its intellectual level a litte (at least to the extent that spelling and grammatical errors become a rarity). And, since Hullfire does not call a decent web appearance its own, I’d like to use what little proficiency I have in PHP, MySQL, and PostNuke to dramatically change that fact.

Fourth, there’s my participation in Tech Comm, the club that handles all the sound and lighting equipment around campus and in the Union’s pubs and the Asylum nightclub. Since I do have some background and experience in the field, I think I can play my part in making things move on smoothly. It’s also a good opportunity to keep up-to-date on technology and hone my skills in these departments so I don’t loose touch with my proficiencies.

Besides that, I’m considering picking up ballroom and latin dancing again, and maybe joining the Karate club to get my body back to the power and stamina level it once held.

All in all, it promises to be a tough schedule, considering the fact that I also have to STUDY. And my creative writing has been lying dead for the summer months, so I need to pick up on that again, too. I already alloted one hour each day to writing, part of which I’m using right now to compose this journal entry… for lack of any other idea on how to get back into “the vibe”.
